This timeline was the version of events as I learned them in a New Jersey Public School. 

June 17, 1972

Woodward and Bernstein started to investigate the break-in of the Democratic National Committee. 

June 20, 1972

The Facts

Woodward has his first of several meetings with the source and informant known as “Deep Throat,” whose identity was not known at this time. 

October 1972

Woodward and Bernstein published multiple high-profile articles regarding the Watergate Scandal. These included: 

-the FBI had made connections between Nixon aides and the Watergate break-in

-the existence of a major “dirty tricks” campaign conducted against Democratic Presidential candidate Edmund Muskie

November 7, 1972

Nixon is re-elected against democratic candidate George McGovern.

January 8, 1973

The Watergate trials begin. 

July 16, 1973

Alexander Butterfield testifies that Nixon recorded all of his conversations in the Oval Office on secret tapes. Archibald Cox, who was the independent investigator looking into the Watergate trial, requests they be handed over. 

July through October 1973

Nixon refuses to hand over the tapes in any capacity. 

November 1973

The courts make Nixon hand over the six tapes that then leads to his downfall within the public sphere. He is then made to hand over the rest. 

May 9, 1974

The House Judiciary Committee starts impeachment proceedings.

July 30, 1974

The House formally votes on the impeachment of Richard Nixon, which found him to have obstructed justice, misused his power and been in contempt of Congress

August 5, 1974

Richard Nixon resigns and Gerald Ford becomes president, granting former president Nixon a full pardon of any potential crimes he may or may not have carried out.
