Watergate rediscovered

The front-runner in the Democratic primary was Sen. Ed Muskie from Maine. However, Nixon ultimately ended up going against George McGovern, a candidate hated by both sides. How did Muskie fall from grace? A smear campaign by Richard Nixon. Nixon hired Elmer Wyatt to spy on Muskie's campaign and Xerox documents to his headquarters. Nixon also hired people to call New Hampshire voters and speak in "black" accents supporting Muskie in the middle of the night. Ultimately Muskie snapped after the many similar hiking that Nixon pulled and gave a speech where he looked unpolished and scared. He lost his momentum and the nomination. Nixon was never charged for any of these fraudulent undertakings.
