The TEMPO instrument is a UV-visible spectrometer, the first space-based instrument to hourly monitor air pollutants. The geostationary orbit will allow the satellite to have a constant view of North America, coast to coast from Mexico City to the Canadian oil sands. The spectrometer will measure sunlight that is reflected and scattered across Earth’s surface and atmosphere. Spectra will be produced of the tropospheric ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and others. In addition to atmospheric elements, TEMPO will also make measurements of ozone indicators, aerosols, and clouds.
