OCO-2, which began gathering data about six weeks into its orbit, carries three high-resolution grating spectrometers onboard that measures the absorption of reflected sunlight by carbon dioxide and oxygen gases. The satellite makes about 100,000 measurements per day about Earth’s carbon.
