The microwave background radiation are remnants of the Big Bang, which the creation of the universe.  The temperature variations depicted as varying shades of blue and purple are linked to density variations early on in the universe.  They're believed to have been the structures that gave rise to populate the universe from clusters of galaxies to vast empty regions.
